American Home Products of Madison, New Jersey, has appointed Charles Portwood as president, global supply chain for Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals — the company’s pharmaceutical division. Portwood succeeds Jack Bucceri who has decided to retire at the end of this year. Bucceri headed Wyeth’s supply chain organisation for more than nine years. Portwood joins Wyeth-Ayerst from Aventis Pharmaceuticals, Bridgewater, New Jersey, where he most recently served as senior vice president, strategy and industrial excellence.
Tony Bastock was elected as the new president of the Chemicals Industries Association (CIA), London. Bastock, who is a former vice president of the CIA and chairman of the business and trade board, will succeed Barry Stickings. Bastock is also a member of the government’s advisory committee on business and the environment.
Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals, Princeton, New Jersey, has announced the appointment of Stephanie Seremetis, MD, as medical director of its BioPharmaceuticals business unit. Seremetis will be responsible for all clinical research involving the company’s biopharmaceutical products. She will also lead all medical liaison and affairs activities within the biopharmaceuticals division.
Ilan Chet has been elected president of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, by its board of governors. Chet will assume presidential responsibilities on 1 December 2001, with the conclusion of Haim Harari’s 13-year presidential term. For the past ten years, Chet has served as vice president for R&D; at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research deals with the biological control of plant disease using environment-friendly microorganisms.
The board of directors of Lyondell Chemical, Houston, Texas, has named Charles L Hall vice president and controller of the company. In his new position, Hall will be responsible for financial accounting and reporting, budgeting and internal control operations for the Lyondell enterprise, which includes Lyondell and its affiliate Equistar Chemicals. Hall comes to Lyondell from BP, formerly BP Amoco, in Chicago, Illinois, where he served 16 years in a variety of financial roles.
Jonathan Gorick has been appointed joint managing director, along with Len Daniels, of Preston-based Industrial Copolymers, UK. Prior to this, Gorick was operations director. Lionel Gorick, who founded the company in 1986 with Daniels, was previously joint managing director. He continues as chairman.
Paul Moser has been appointed vice president of central nervous system (CNS) development at Genset. He will be leading CNS research programmes at the company in Evry, France. Moser previously spent six years with Sanofi-Synthelabo, Paris, as group leader in psychopharmacology. Genset is a genomics company focused on generating a pipeline of drug targets and candidates in the areas of CNS and metabolic disorders.
Huvin Thompson is this year’s winner of the Alec Hough-Grassby memorial award, which is presented by the Institute of Measurement and Control, London, for outstanding contributions to the research, development and application of process analysers in industrial environments. Thompson is senior vice-president of ABB’s analytical instrumention operations in the UK, based in Brighton.
Albert Baehny has been appointed head of the polymers division at Wacker-Chemie in Munich, Germany. He has also been made president and CEO of Wacker Polymer Systems, Burghausen, Germany. Baehny has seven years managerial experience at Ciba Geigy, Basel, Switzerland
